Do you remember what size you used for the rivet? Based on the size of the second drift it looks like around 13 or 11 mm but maybe I'm wrong and it's closer to 9 or 10.

I am always amazed how much the stock reduces in volume during the forging process. All that shit flying off when you hit it, is it steel that gets wasted or some kind of slag / impurity being driven out by the compacting of the steel? 😮

I would highly recommend to read a few books about iron smelting - iron age upto the industrial revolution. Then iron production by the puddling process that was done in the industrial revolution. Then iron/steel production from the Bessemer process and the modern/current processes. That will give you exactly the answers you are looking for.

I really hope you to repost all the tutorial videos that you deleted, because we should not care about negative comments from rude people and forget about those who really need your helpful knowledge to blacksmithing in particular and society in general. And moreover, one of the most important reasons is that people often don't sincerely share their knowledge as you did. Dear my friend!

Silly question: How precise do the two ends have to be in relation to each other? Better way of asking: how sloppy can the parts be and still weld without getting too mad at it?

But you're making it on an anvil.. how were anvils made before anvils were made?

    • @TechnicusJoe

This is a modern anvil design, not iron age for example. Anvil makers used anvils to forge their anvils. Though those anvil making anvils look nothing like the anvils they make on them. The further you go back in time, you get to the point big flat enough rocks are used to make the first anvils. Like saying but you used a lathe to make a lathe. Go back and it was chisels and files that made the first crude lathe which allowed for more precise tools and a next better lathe. and so on. The same counts for anvils. The anvil did not appear over night, the design changed and continues to change depending on the available materials and techniques of a given time.

Think about it. The first lathe was not made with a lathe. There was no lathe before it. Excluding woodworking lathes, they dont operate the same way.
